Going off of Ben Gammon's presentation on musicals got me to thinking about how musical films have been an influence on my life and what my favorite musical films are. I think if I were to trace back the roots of my musical film influences I honestly would not have much to show. As a child I always felt like the music deterred me from the narrative. As I got a little older my respect for the musical arts grew as I began to enjoy more fully films like Mary Poppins, West Side Story, and Singin' in the Rain.
As films began to grab a hold of me in a different way I turned to classical films to get an all-around sense of the history of cinema. I fell in love with early Fred Astaire films full of singing and dancing. I then turned back to the modern age to enjoy films like Moulin Rouge!, Les Miserables, and Mama Mia! Musical films may still not be my favorite, but they accomplish what other films may not be able to do. That is the combination of multiple art forms into one great motion picture experience.
