Last class, we took the first reading quiz. This quiz is actually
one of the most chill, relaxed quizzes I have ever taken. Normally, I don’t
like quizzes, as they are taken in silence. Extreme silence (i.e. the kind that
most classrooms have during a quiz) is the second worst thing on the face of
the earth (extreme, sudden loudness is the worst.)That day, we also looked at
two artists, who work in entirely different mediums, Makoto Fujimura and Bill
Viola.
I find Makoto Fujimura's art to be quite fascinating. I think it
is fascinating that a Christian painter is actually gaining respect and
notoriety, and not scorn and mockery. (Although this may be part of the medium
he works in). Fujimura is also gaining fame in non-Christian ways. Similarly,
Bill Viola is another artist we looked at, this time using video. I find his
work fascinating, as it more of a art-piece than a film. His films do not
directly tell stories, but instead use motion to convey meaning. Personally, I
find it fascinating to use film in that way, as I feel that we have been
conditioned to say “OK, this is a movie. I am going to be shown and told a
story”. The Ascension is actually a (correct me if I’m wrong) 2 minute film,
showing someone rising from water (with a cross-ish shape in the background) in
EXTREME slow motion, probably around 2-3 frames per second.
Sorry for the low quality image. I live at home, and my internet isn't the best. |
I don't think I had ever seen a work that's a cross between a film and a painting before Thursday's class. Pretty neat.
