I have a weird understanding of Saturday Morning Cartoons.
Growing up my parents were more akin to "strict Christians" in where I was often not allowed to watch TV, and encouraged not to watch it at friend's houses. So we didn't get TV until I was maybe in Jr High, and only because we constantly begged and my dad let us try it out. Only to take it away a year later because it was "too much of a distraction"
I never saw the "traditional" Saturday morning cartoons of Cartoon Network. Traditional meaning the most often raved-about "SMC"s I hear from fellow students. Usually when someone mentions SMCs people gravitate towards Cartoon Network's "glory days" (not to say it isn't still rad) and I wish I could've seen more of them.
When we did have TV, we didn't have CN, the only cartoon-showing channels we had were Nickelodeon, the Nicktoons Network, Fox and Boomerang. But we would always wake up for SMCs on Fox, back when they had the "FoxBox" with shows like TMNT, Sonic X, Kirby Right Back At Ya, Winx Club, etc. Those were my Saturday morning cartoons. But goodness it was so much fun waking up early and sitting in front of the TV with my brothers to collectively enjoy a show together. I miss those days. Later on the FoxBox turned into 4Kids, and took a downward spiral into lame-ness, and we only watched it for Sonic X, as all the other shows we'd watch were replaced with lamer shows.
I wish the Saturday morning cartoon would make a come-back. I would love sitting in front of the TV eating snacks and watching with my brothers. There was something homey about it, it was a tradition that you shared and enjoyed together, and gave a very warm cozy enjoyable family feeling, at least for me.
I might buy a few old cartoon DVDs and start a tradition of our own make-shift Saturday morning cartoons back home someday.
