Point and Click

In the vein of video games I truly believe that one genre that gets woefully left by the wayside is the Point-And-Click Adventure game. This of course is a style of game that truly stems from text based games from the 80's. A rather notable example is Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy text based game. A game that is diabolically difficult due to its complexity and the ability for the player to make irreparable mistakes with the simplest of keystrokes.

With the invent of a graphics user interface came the possibility for game makers to create entire worlds for players to explore with just a click of their mouse.  The very first LucasArts point and click game was called “Maniac Mansion” and it certainly lives up to its name.

The 90’s are most widely regarded as the golden era for these types of games and have given us many wonderful adventures to choose from.

I almost exclusively played LucasArts titles because that’s what I had available to me at the time.  However the pixel artwork will always be something that I find wondrously beautiful.  It is a true genre in gaming that I believe has been woefully overlooked by the community at large because it relied heavily upon creativity and problem solving skills.  Rather than having a clear cut course from point A to B it challenged the gamer to think in ways he/she has never had to before.
