This was my first time watching
Peter Pan as a musical and the first time ever live; it was truly exciting. As
it is traditionally done, Peter was played by a girl, Allison Williams. She did
a pretty good job as did all the characters, but I think I still would have
preferred her to be a boy. It also diminishes the awkwardness between Wendy and
Peter. I had a slight problem seeing my favorite villain, Captain Hook, dancing
around the stage in a slightly girlish fashion; it diminished his threatening
personality. Overall though, the acting and singing was pretty good, plus it’s
a lot of pressure to do something live so I admire them for that. I know I
would never be able to do it. I think my favorite character was the little boy
who played Michael Darling. He was so enthusiastic with the few lines he had
and when he was excited he would shriek like a little girl… it was so cute.
I
enjoyed the set design a lot though; they used a very bright color pallet to
display Neverland. The town of London was so cool looking when they were flying
over the rooftops. I don’t know if I really liked a whole lot of the CG stuff
they did, like Tinkerbell. I would have preferred they used a flashlight and an
actress to play her character like they did in the original plays. The shadow
effects were cool though. In conclusion, it was cute and enjoyable but I don’t
think I would want to pay to see it.
