Music's impact on films

I am curious to get some feedback on this topic but since it is the end of the semester it probably won’t happen, but if you see this feel free to comment your thoughts.  How important do you think music is in a film?  I feel like music plays a rather significant part in film and without it we would be somewhat lost during the film but I suppose it also depends on the film.

Picture this though.  A man is outside with his beloved dog when all of a sudden a car hits it and the dog dies.  The music here can really help determine what the next scene is going to look like.  They could play very sad violin music to help express how heartbroken the owner is or they could choose to play a hardcore death metal song that would help express that this owner is about to open a can of whoop ass on this guy that just killed his dog.  I honestly think that is a pretty good example because I feel like music matters the most during very tragic events.  Without music (or the proper music choice) to guide us through films I think that we might be a little mislead throughout films.
