So in my presentation today, I mentioned that I'm not a big fan of being scared. To be more specific, I scare so easily. Many times I end up playing a game for a little while, running into a scare, and pausing the game for 10 or so minutes to get my heart rate back under control. So, how do I enjoy the more macabre stories that horror games often have?
One way I mentioned was playing with friends. If shit gets too real for me, I pass the controller over to someone else while I try and calm myself down. It still breaks my immersion, but not as much as pausing the game would. However many of those friends don't go to college here, so what's a poor anxious girl to do?
Watch let's plays, of course! Let's players act as a buffer for me, allowing me to still feel scared, but without as much intensity as if I was playing a scary game by myself. Plus, they've helped me have better control of my fear response; once the steam sales pop up over break, you can be I'll be all over that Alien Isolation.
