League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena, or MOBA, meaning that (in usual play) you're on a team of live people also playing at the same time. There are currently 121 champions available to play, and more are being developed and released. The game is just about to start it's 5th year (currently in pre-season 5).
League of Legends is much like Dota 2 or a number of other MOBAs out there right now, but League is steadily gaining ground all around the world. There are championships in Korea, the United States, Europe, and the world combined, servers in all sorts of countries and regions, and players from adolescent to adult. There are even professional players - this year, U.S. government stated that it officially recognizes Esports players (essentially video game "athletes") as international athletes worthy of separate visas when entering the country to play.
Some colleges are even offering scholarships to high skill players to join official teams and compete nationally against other collegiate League teams.
I'm not 100% sure how I feel about the whole athlete thing, but I do really enjoy the game and I know that a lot of work gets put into it and it (for the most part) deserves the popularity it has. It's a simple game on the surface, but very complex as you learn more and get better. I'd suggest looking into it more yourself if you're curious - I know others in this class play it too.
