Growing up i used to watch a lot of anime on cartoon network. I would love to watch things like Naruto, One Piece, or Zach Bell. but over time i started to drift away from it. (mainly due to my families cancelation of any tv programs other than the free ones). I now look at the culture that was created from so many people that enjoy watching it and can't help but think that maybe some of them go to far. But then again i'm not one to go to things like comic con or conventions for that matter. I guess the main thing i tend to focus on is the culture, but lately i've started watching anime again. I notice that for some of the cases the animation is somewhat cheaply done. by this i mean that they basically have, for the most part, stills with just an animated mouth. But the thing that hooks me about it is the story. and to me thats the most important thing. without a great story there would be no purpose.

Oh, man, if you're looking for good anime, Kino no Tabi (Kino's Journey) and Serial Experiments Lain are my absolute favorites. They're each 13 episodes long, and they're really powerful, tragic ones. Lain is a psychological sci-fi type thing about a girl who discovers that she can upload her consciousness to the Internet, and she essentially BECOMES the Internet and blurs the line between reality and the virtual world, and she erases herself from existence at one point but realizes that she's super lonely, and it's-- ahhh, so lovely. And then Kino is just magical, and I don't know how to properly describe it to someone. That anime changed me for the better, and it certainly covers some difficult subject matter and asks hard questions about our society and ourselves as a people. If we could read minds, would we want to? Is democracy a good thing? Is it true that the good die young? Please, please, please watch these because they're great story-wise, and I feel like they put a lot of the more mainstream animes to shame.
ReplyDeleteUN-GO is another pretty interesting one about a demon and a detective who solve crimes together, but it's not as powerful as Kino no Tabi or Serial Experiments Lain.
If you like sports anime, I just finished watching Haikyuu!! but that one was eh compared to the other three I've listed.
Anyway, I hope you're enjoying your trek back into anime! Hopefully, the bad stuff doesn't discourage you and keep you from looking for the good stuff!
