Geri is Bae

As soon as I heard that we were going to watch Pixar, I just knew in my heart that we'd watch Geri's Game. I can't begin to think about how many times I watched this short when I was a kid. I'd gotten A Bug's Life on DVD (probably one of the first of its time), and that was the beginning of my love for this little old man.

It had been a long time since I'd had the pleasure of watching this film, and I think that this time, even though it was still just as entertaining as it's always been, I was looking at it with a new perspective, which led to a new discovery. As we all know, Geri is sitting at the table alone, competing with himself in this magical game of chess.

He goes back and forth with each turn, playing for each side. Af first, the cuts are slow and show him slowly getting up and sitting down again. Soon, the pace picks up as the game becomes more intense, and THEN WE SEE BOTH GERIS AT THE SAME TIME???

I love this scene, because we as viewers just accept it, we don't even question the fact that he's by himself, yet there is this hand at the forefront of this scene, and Geri is in the back watching. This is only possible because of the genuine brilliancy of the writing of this film; the writers distinctly create two different personalities for "each Geri," so we already have a distinction between them. Therefore, we already perceive that two people are playing the game, until the end, when it goes back to just the original Geri sitting alone again.

I could talk about this film for days, but I will leave it at this: THIS IS THE BEST PIXAR SHORT.

*heart explodes because he is literally the cutest*
