First off, I just have to say that my initial thought in Colorforms is that I wanted to slap that child for making that kind of mess. Now would I ever do that? No, but I like cleanliness so my child would know better. Anywho, I appreciated the premise of this piece. I myself had a great connection with my grandfather before he passed away. I still have an ever greater relationship with my grandmother because we've taken care of each other through the years. The grandfather here, I believe, had the correct approach.
If a child, or anyone in general, repeatedly does something they aren't supposed to then finding an outlet for express that said action is the next best thing. Whereas the parents just wanted to discipline her, the grandfather took her out to experience a new cultural. In this day and age that would be wise for many of us to experience new cultures than our own. I'm all for "Merica, Heck Ya!", but many cultures have positive attributes that we do not so it wise for us to all learn from one another.
In short, again, it is best to find a positive outlet if you have the desire to do something like make a mess. I like what you said Leeper, about your daughter drawing on walls, as I am all for mementos. They're sort of lost in this tech first society.
