A difficult job
-
- There are many different ways to make a person laugh and a comedian's job is to make sure that they do it effectively and in a way that seems natural to the viewing audience. This, depending on who you are, can be extremely difficult to pull off. What’s even more difficult is crafting jokes that expose hard truths about the world around us while also being funny. Now let’s take it one step further up the difficulty scale and make those jokes understandable and relatable to children. “That’s ridiculous!” you might say. “Nobody can break down the cruel nature of this planet into bite sized chunks that children can laugh at!” That’s where you’re wrong.
One of my favorite comics is Bill Watterson's “Calvin and Hobbes.” It’s a seemingly simple comic that, on the surface, seems to be nothing more than the adventures of a six year old boy and his stuffed tiger. However, when you peel back the layers, you begin to see Watterson’s genius explode out of every cartoon panel. Here’s a man who is able to take the harsh realities of earth and refract it through the lens of Calvin’s eyes, realities such as the unspoken truth behind the educational system.

- The realities of losing a childhood pet
Or even something a child would not be worrying about such as having big expectations on things.
The wonderful thing that Bill does is that the shows these issues through the eyes of a child. One of the brilliant things I love about him is his ability to make a difficult situation seem lighthearted by showing it through the eyes of a child. When we become adults, we are already polluted by life. We know why things happen and we sometimes don't know how to deal with them. Calvin and Hobbes shows that children can deal with the issues that adults face but react to them with a distinctive mindset and this is why I love Calvin and Hobbes so much.
