Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt is by far one of my favorite
songs, because it brings to light the misconceptions we have of fame and
fortune. We look towards celebrities and we are jealous their success, when the
truth of the matter is they are just as messed up as we are. Despite their big house,
fancy cars, and private jets, they still hurt like everyone else. In view of
his life, the song Hurt paints a sad picture of Johnny Cash’s life of self-destruction
and torment.
“The needle tears a
hole
The old familiar
sting
Try to kill it all
away
But I remember
everything.”
Instead of happy sappy “positive alternative music,”
Christians artist today should be brutally honest about their pain and
struggles in life with the music they produce and with the songs they write.
