Anyway…
The Prince of Egypt has always been one of my favorite movies. It was one of those VHS tapes that I played over and over again as a kid, and even now I'd say it's in my top 5 favorite movies ever (it's the only animated one there).
One of the reasons I love it so much is because of the storytelling - the film doesn't drag with it a message of "Christian love" or "Christian faith" or "Christian lifestyle." It's merely a telling of the account of the Israelite people and their exodus from Egypt, and the life of a man named Moses, as found in the Old Testament. I've never felt manipulated as an audience member, being demanded to take everything I watch as fact, nor am I told exactly what it all means. The Prince of Egypt recounts an amazing story, known to three totally different religions, and leaves it for you to absorb or ignore or interpret as you will.
At the beginning of the film is this statement:
"The motion picture you are about to see is an adaptation of the Exodus story.
While artistic and historical license has been taken, we believe that this film is true to the essence, values, and integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide."
I respect this so much.
Not only that, but it's an incredibly well crafted film, with animation that doesn't distract from the story but enhances it, characters that are complex and well-developed, and an AMAZING soundtrack. Seriously. So good.
I definitely recommend this movie, Christian or not. It's just a good film.
