More animation stuff

While were on the subject of animation, I'd thought I'd share some of my favorite pieces of animation.

One of my favorite animated scenes from a live-action film is the Tale of the Three Brothers sequence from the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1. The only fully animated sequence in the entire franchise uses bold silhouettes to create the scene, and was inspired by the works of Lotte Reiniger, an Austrian born animator from the 1930s and 50s.

I've always been a fan of stop motion animation as well as Lego sets. My first experience with film making was when I was around 10 years old using my Lego Studios set, which came complete with a stop motion camera, a disaster movie set, a really basic editing software, and Stephen Spielberg mini-figure. This short film, an extra from the Monty Python and the Holy Grail DVD, was the reason I wanted it so badly.

One of my favorite recently released animated films is Ernest and Celestine. While I really enjoyed the story, that's not why it's on the list. In an age where everyone is racing for the most realistic CGI, and even Disney doesn't really make cartoons anymore, it was really refreshing to see a film that looked like an illustration in a children's storybook.

The final entry on this list is the music video for the song Awakening by Switchfoot. For parts of the video, they shot the band performing, then printed out each frame, cut the band members out, placed them in the scene, then took a picture.

They only use this technique for part of the video due to technical restraints (it took 3 printers 22 hours to print all the images), but I've always wanted to do an entire music video or short film like this.

The entire video if you're interested:

  1. Lego was my life. (Well, it still is, but there's no room for all of it in my dorm room, sadly...)
I made all kinds of Lego stop motion stuff. ... Lego Studios - I remember it fondly.

Forgot how cool that animation piece was from The Deathly Hallows. Thanks for the reminder.
