Disney and Pixar Pfffffft!

In last thursday's class we talked about how art doesn't have to be flashy to "good".  The biggest problem that I have seen lately with disney and pixar films is lack of uniqueness and story line.  Pixar tends to keep a great plot line.  They do make films that follow a progression that makes sense on the contrary they most likely lose the inspiration from the animators behind the scenes.  Disney on the other hand never seems to have a great plot line in their 3D films nowadays.  Their 2D films however we're mostly spot on, but at the same time they've changed direction so much that they have lost their talent in good story telling as well as the inspiration of the animators behind the scenes.  There is a particular kind of design that both of these company's that bring to the table that are absolutely stunning, however it's better to have a fun and "sloppy" animation style that tells a great story rather than to always try to be clean cut.  I have noticed this in my own work.  Some of my best work has been far from Disney or Pixar level however it actually feels fun and enjoyable.  Both of these companies spend millions of dollars to create "stunning" feature length films that lose their meaning along the way, while the independent animator or small studio brings forth much more meaningful and fun animation.  I think at this stage of their game they will never come to realize this and they will continue to spend more money than necessary to create films.  It's sad to see how many talented artists are out their that create fantastic films in their own art style never make it big because their is "some sort of demand for spectacular animation."  I hope that one day people other than just animators themselves can start appreciating their artwork.  What I mean is, I hope that the general public realizes that there are other types of art forms bigger and better than Disney and Pixar out there.  Would it be cool to see a small studio make it as big as Disney and Pixar? YES! However, If that EVER happens, I pray they never lose sight of the inspiration of other animator's stylistic choices.
