The Cruel World We Live In

Listening to the words of the song "Georgia Lee", it's quite evident the artist wants us to question why God wasn't there for this girl when she needed him. Why would God let this young girl drop out of school? Why would he let her be so lonely? Why did he let her die the way she did? Why didn't he intervene? I think that was the general theme of the class today. Why didn't God help out in any of these situations?

The poor, fat pig in "The Prayer of the Little Pig" could not understand why the Lord had made him so tender. Why would God let these people be so polite to him and fatten him up, only to make him into bacon?

In "Small Hands" by Keaton Henson, we have to watch the harsh reality when the beautiful creatures are hunted down by their predators and forced face the cruel loneliness of the world. Why did God let these poor little animals die?

In the short film "Fridge", which I thought was the brightest of the dark films we watched, we see underprivileged young people committing disgusting acts like trying to catch a homeless man on fire and locking a child in a refrigerator. When two drunks struggle to get a child out of the fridge before he suffocates, the film begs the question, "why should they have to go through so many struggles to try to rescue the kid?" and also "why is no one willing to help them in their time of need?". But in the end they all look past their own problems and save the child.

The last film we watched, "World of Glory", was by far the most eye-opening for me. The narrator took us through his extremely depressing everyday routine, which was kicked off with helpless people being forced into a truck that poured exhaust into the back, killing them. He spoke about how his father had died, showed his son getting a very regrettable tattoo on his forehead and wasting his life away in prison, and led up to him loosing his mind in the end imagining he is blind and hearing screaming late into the night. After his tragically eventful day his wife tells him to get some sleep or else he won't be alright tomorrow, but everyone knows he will not be "alright" the next day. Even though he asks for forgiveness for his sins at the church during communion, we know nothing is about to change for him.

All of these films make a person wonder where God was during these situations. Someone can say it's not real since it's only a film, but they would be ignorant and wrong. Things like this have gone on in the past and are still currently going on in the world. Maybe not in our backyards, but it is happening somewhere, and we all need to be aware of it as humans. These films are without a doubt very dark and disturbing, but they also beautifully portray the harsh reality that most of us lend blind eye and a deaf ear to.
