From the reading and lecture from Rookmakker's Christians in a Changing World I took away a really great and specific quote that I was really able to hold on to.
It reads:
"And as we look around, it is hard to see a great culture breaking down around us... But for that very reason, these are exciting times. God has called us to bear witness to Him at a critical point of history. It is not only exciting and interesting to be a Christian now, it is a great privilege and responsibility. And it is vital."
It's true. We do have a different culture than we did decades ago. Christians and Christian ideals don't control the flow of societal norms anymore. We are in a secular time. It isn't even necessarily a bad thing to me personally. This way we can learn something new and break from some things we may have perceived in a wrong light before. We have to take the opportunity to go out and change lives with our filmmaking. To bring great messages and themes to our audiences. To challenge them in ways that haven't been challenged before. To make them think differently, even if it would hurt them to do so.
It is our God given responsibility to help people with our filmmaking. To show society what we think as artists as all the great artists did before us. Hitchcock, Capra, Bergman, Kurosawa, and Allen all did it. We can do it too. That is what I have always wanted to do as a filmmaker, help others through the power of story telling. I saw glimpses of that future of mine today. Helping others and challenging the world through the power of film.
